This shoe was so small that I could not get it on my foot without cutting the sides to allow it to slip over the top of my foot. Do not waste your money on this shoe.

A: Thank you for your question! While small debris is able to pass through when exposed, the air flow design keeps air flowing through the shoe and out the sole for a breathable design and keeping small dirt and sand draining away from the shoe. Hope this helps!
